Abstract

Traditional distance and virtual education in Colombia have developed significantly in the last 10 years due to global trends regarding the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) and national government policies aimed at expanding coverage, incorporating ICT into education, and strengthening of technical and technological programs in higher education. This paper focusses on the progress of distance education modalities in Colombia and reflects on the conceptual and methodological approaches developed by the Remington in its 12 years of experience in distance education. The discussion takes into consideration the strategies developed by Remington to ensure its national coverage and the quality of the training process applied to the distance education and virtual institutional models in each of its Tutorial Service Centers (CAT: Centros de Atencion Tutorial) from an academic perspective.
