Factors Associated with the Well-being of Adolescents Under Guardianship in Protection Systems: A Systematic Review

Abstract
The well-being of adolescents within child protection systems is an area of interest for disciplines such as psychology and pedagogy, and understanding the factors associated with well-being is important for the development of public policies and the implementation of socio-educational intervention strategies. This article presents a systematic literature review aimed at identifying the factors linked to psychological well-being among adolescents living in foster settings between 2018 and 2025. To this end, 23 studies were selected from 294 records retrieved from five international databases. Findings indicate that factors such as resilience, support networks, socioemotional relationships, readiness for independent living, and emotional stability influence the adolescents’ psychological well-being. Moreover, adolescents in the child protection system reported lower levels of perceived well-being than their peers in traditional family environments. These findings underscore the need to expand research on the well-being and quality of life of adolescents in the child protection system and also point to the importance of interventions that prioritize individualized care, education, and ongoing support to ensure developmental opportunities that prepare youth for transitioning out of the system and reintegrating safely into society.
